The Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida is a non-profit organization and the largest provider of homeless services in Central Florida. The current exhibit features artwork by children currently residing at the organization. Last year, 250 homeless children participated in the ABCs (Art by Coalition Children) program. There are currently 31,148 homeless families with children in the state. The Coalition strives to end the crisis of homelessness with the community’s support. Last year alone, the organization served over 4,000 homeless individuals.
The program provides children with an outlet through which to creatively express themselves. In 2013, Florida was deemed the most dangerous state for homeless people. The goal of the exhibit is to work with the Coalition to raise awareness about the issue of homelessness that is so prominent in the Orlando area.
The ABCs program is a volunteer-based program that pairs professional artists in the community with children living at the Coalition. Artists work with the kids to create a wide variety of art, from black and white photography to sculpture and painting. Often struggling with low self-esteem, the Coalition’s children benefit from the program’s nurturing environment. Through ABCs, they have the opportunity to learn about the arts and have the freedom to creatively express themselves.
