The Sun-Painted Banners

The day the children gathered to make the banners, the skies were sunny and clear. Large cloth sheets, pre-treated with emulsion, were laid out onto the lawn in front of the Appleton Creative house. Each child laid onto a sheet like a beach towel, in whatever pose they chose. After several minutes the sheets turned blue along the edges leaving a white silhouette where the child rested.

After sun-painting, the children decorated colorful shapes of felt that were later sewn onto their banners. The dramatic visual results of the banners allowed the children to channel their emotions with this new means of expression.

The banners were created by ArtWorks, a program of St. Lukes United Methodist Church.
